Additional information

Georgios Anagnostou has been Full Professor of Tunnelling at the Division of Geotechnical Engineering at ETH Zurich since September 2003.

Prof. Anagnostou was born in 1959 in Athens, Greece, and graduated in civil engineering from the University of Karlsruhe in 1983. From 1983 to 1993 he was a research associate at the Rock Mechanics and Tunnelling Group of the ETH Zurich. In 1991 he received his Ph.D. degree with a thesis on tunnelling in swelling rock. His Ph.D. dissertation was awarded the silver medal of ETH Zurich. Subsequently, he transferred to industry and worked as a consulting engineer. He was involved as design engineer, tunnelling expert or design reviewer in several projects. In 2014 he was appointed Sir Alan Muir Wood memorial lecturer by the International Tunnelling Association. In 2016 he was presented the prestigious Geotechnical Research Medal by the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Prof. Anagnostou teaches the Tunnelling and Rock Mechanics courses. His research deals with the classic rock pressure theories (squeezing rocks, swelling rocks), deformation and stability problems of underground structures in soil and rock and geotechnical auxiliary measures (forepoling and face reinforcement, grouting in geological fault zones, artificial ground freezing, drainage), including the development of advanced numerical methods, of models for coupled processes and of demanding experimental techniques.
